Pros: the visualizations, interactive notebook that is dynamic and graphs that make it easier to understand
Cons: steep learning curve and expensive. limited community support can make it take a while to figure out how to make it work, but owrth it after
Tanner H. · Financial Advisor · Financial Services · April 29, 2025
Generally good. Have used it since it was called SMP so familiar with most of it. However, even after 30 years I can still have trouble getting some of the tools to behave like I want them too - so expect a long learning curve.
Pros: Useful in teaching vector calculus. Manipulatives help in showing how vectors and tensors change over time.
Cons: 1) Error messages are nearly worthless. 2) The canvas drawing tool works poorly and unpredictably - especially in the latest version. 3) The fact that [sensitive content hidden] feels the need to put the "Wolfram" signature on everything is arrogant at the very least - this is the one complaint that tempted me to switch to other, competing products. 4) Typesetting is still nowhere near what a good LaTeX engine can do. Major disappointment.

Pros: It is very helpful program to solve hard mathematical problems with nice feature of graph rendering. Only with few skills of programming is user capable to reach results.
Cons: I my opinion annual price is high for personal use. Also using different expressions for mathematical formulas could be from beginning quite confusing. It take some time to learn this properly.

Cons: Non ho trovato bug in questo software, ma consiglio di aumentare la velocità
Antonella S. · Frontend Developer · Computer Games · January 31, 2023
Well designed, insanely well integrated and functional. The most powerful mathematical solver software I have ever used.
Pros: The sheer versatility of the product. It has so much depth and can be used to program and develop mathematical models with ease like no other product I have used before. To be able to call on information from the internet within your code or to add to your solution is mind-blowing. The well designed interface allows any user to easily keep track of their work and report the required results
Cons: The only con I can say for Wolfram is that from time to time especially with too many variables and complex modelling the software would take some time to calculate and output. But the time is nothing compared to other platforms attempting to do the same projects.

Pros: Extremely beginner friendly software allowing users to solve all kinds of math problems without the need of knowing how to programming. All the tools are intuitive and the solution is presented in a very clear amd comprehensive manner in comparison with a programming script.
Cons: There is difficulty in debugging because despite the ease of use, this type of writing a problem makes the error finding more challenging.

Lorenzo P. · Studente · Research · December 8, 2022
Rafael Dario G. · Docente Tecnico · Research · December 4, 2022
Overall, It provides great convenience in symbolic operations and graphic drawings, it is far superior to matlab with these features. but there are such equations that mathematica can't solve for hours. If you are working with fractional numbers, the rationalize command shortens the processing time quite a bit.
Pros: Especially drawing complex graphics can create a masochistic pleasure in people. Unlike matlab, which almost industrialized the graphic drawing business, creating graphics in mathematica is a craft. all the coordinates are entered manually (at one point they came to the mercy and put the 3d viewpoint selector command on the input menu, but there you see only the axes, not what you drew, the rest is up to your imagination). The handiwork that comes out at the end is brilliant, you can't help showing it to your friends.
Cons: Although it is a software that I greatly appreciate, it can sometimes drive me crazy with the error sentences it gives. opening and closing the program from time to time can be useful. It needs to be emptied when the memory is full, otherwise it gives more errors in new calculations.

Use it daily for more than 30 years now
Pros: This software allows you to think and program at the level of the problem at hand. The possibility to combine, symbolics, numerics, great visualization and wonderful smart programming languages is unique. In addition, the front-end allows you to easily document and structure your thoughts along with code.
Cons: Only one programming model I found missing - discrete event style

Mathematica is used as a "canned data" version to process RADAR data. Of course it cannot do real time but that is not the requirement. With Mathematica we have a tool to see almost instantaneously if any new idea has a perspective to work or not. I am personally using Mathematica since 1990 using the "good old" Version 1.2 on a MacIntosh...
Pros: It is a really sturdy workhorse for any purposes. We do lots of RADAR data evaluations, FEM simulations, recently also NN modelling. The general strategy is to implement an algorithm in Mathematica and use this as a benchmark when the same algorithm will be transferred to c++. In contrast to other commercial available packages the output of integral transforms can be adapted to the culture (e.g. signal processing versus mathematical parameter sets for Fourier transform) and we get exactly the envisaged behavior. Generally, one can get algorithmic packages to run in one working day that take a man month to be implemented in c++. In addition, we have own packages to generate Gantt charts, project plans, 3D printer code, PCB circuit layouts.
Cons: Documentation is a bit thin, especially newly added functions tend to be poorly described. Neural Networks work fine but the description of the details is dismal! Please improve with some example networks. It took us eternities to grasp the stuff. Plotting even moderately complex 3D Regions (implicit or discretized) is very unstable and it is really a nuisance. It mostly ends with error messages and a complete breakdown of the kernel...

I did some analytically unsolvable calculation for my PhD thesis using Mathematica. The result was good enough for me to extract interesting physics behavior of the mechanical system that I studied.
Pros: Mathematica has a very easy to use user interface and calculates intelligently. It helps solve problems that almost no other familiar academic software programs (MATLAB, COMSOL, etc.) can.
Cons: Despite being not too expensive, Mathematica is not completely free either, while its application in my field seem much more limited. This discourages several entities from purchasing the license.

The latest version is packed with advanced algorithms in geometring computing and is develope geometric computation. Wolfram Mathematica version13 is a package of symbolic mathematics wich integretes cartesian geometry and euclidean geometry, parametric geometry and differential geometry. The new features emphasize shapes and performance and let me to easily model geometric regions and analyze them. For the first time I can to fully integrate generation, analysis, and rendering of geometrical structures. The same regions can also be used as specifications for many high-level solvers, including algebraic and partial differential equation solving. The possibilities of Mathematica are endless.
Pros: I became familiar with the "Mathematica" calculation tool, used for numerical and symbolic computation and for 2D and 3D graphics. I learned to apply it to geometry, to differential calculus and to the management of experimental data in physics Only with intensive use of Wolfram Mathematica , I've see Einstein's theory of relativity in real life and the Riemann Tensor and the Curvature of Ricci , after designed ellipses, torus, hyperboloids and Calabi- Yau spaces. Wolfram Mathematica it's a special tool for the visualization of differential geometry.
Cons: 1.By default, autosave to a Mathematica notebook is missing and the notebook can disappear along with several hours of work, when I forget to manually save. 2. It happened to me. I have imported a dxf file generated in AutoCAD into Mathematica and processed it, when I exported it, the file doesn't load successfully in AutoCAD.

Pros: Mathematica acts as a great visual "check" when trying to conceptualize engineering equations and methods. Especially in the aspect of three dimensions (x, y, t) -- this program has saved myself and my team a headache when visualizing our results. In the student setting, Mathematica serves as a great visual aid for the Calculus/Differential Equations series.
Cons: The coding knowledge can be overbearing, but at a base level of knowledge, this is easily overcome.
John R. · Graduate Research Assistant · Chemicals · July 7, 2022
It’s amazing when you don’t need to write code and just need to analyse some data. It helps in speeding up work and great for college studies
Pros: The ease of solving differential equations as a Blackbox and the implementation of machine learning models without very specific knowledge is great
Cons: Computation time exceeds often and the price is too high
Aniruddha S. · PhD student · Mechanical or Industrial Engineering · May 28, 2022
I've been using Mathematica since 8 years ago, and it helped me a lot to avoid trivial mistakes in my analytic derivations during research.
Pros: Mathematica is a lovely software for scientific computing with all great features in symbolic format.
Cons: The software is becoming more difficult to install and set up, the whole activation process is misleading and not well represented in their documentation.
Mahdiar S. · student · Computer Software · March 29, 2022
Pros: The wolfram codes are easy to use, no need to write anything in matrix like another software.
Cons: It’s not an inexpensive software, takes time to learn for first time, difficult to work with vectors.
Lok Raj P. · Graduate Assistant · Research · March 28, 2022
Wolfram Mathematica is very hard to learn and is expensive, but as soon as you pass through those obstacles, it is definitely a unique software for math related operations. It is worth the time and the money.
Pros: Its non-linear approach to coding makes unique when handling simulations and checking different outputs.
Cons: It is very hard to learn in the beginning, and it is also expensive.
Andrei P. · Student · Education Management · March 26, 2022
Pros: The features and coding language is intuitive for first-time coding beginners. Helpful for learning how to code and is very useful for plotting graphs and functions especially with he manipulate function.
Cons: Very expensive to purchase a liscence and is difficult to switch to other coding languages given how simplified their language is.
Tuieng R. · Researcher · Research · December 16, 2021
I like wolfarm mathematica for its powerful exceutional engine that makes it able to simulate or visualize data very well.
Pros: Mathematica has a great graphics user interface, and it does a fantastic job. It also has a lot of other advantages. It has a huge array of codes and library, though complex but powerful. Mathematica is without a doubt one of the most powerful programmes we use and has a very large and active online society to help in problems.
Cons: What I find difficult about it is its learning curve, as Wolfram is a large language that can take some time to understand and use comfortably. Apart from that, I have no complaints about Wolfram Mathematica because it meets all of my requirements.
Arshad A. · MS. Student · Higher Education · October 26, 2021
I personally really like using Mathematica. I like the 3D images that help me show such objects such as 'donuts' in Calculus.
Pros: As an online college math instructor, I like to use Mathematica to check the harder upper division problems. I hate to get to the answer in class, and it is not the answer - and students are terrible at stopping instructors when they see a small mistake! I like to write out all of my notes and Mathematica is awesome for helping me make it perfect!
Cons: One difficulty is for students that have not programmed before or don't think in symbol text needed to 'program' for answers.
