Overall, I enjoy using AutoCAD to make quick drawings when Revit is not needed. It is great that the overall layout has not changed too much over time where it would be difficult to find many items you are used to in previous versions. There are little refinements over the years that keep making the software better and better.
Pros: I have used AutoCAD for years and I like the ease of use and how features continually get improved to make drafting that much easier. I like how AutoCAD can be used to quickly draft in 2D when you need to get a drawing out quick as opposed to using Revit which can take some time because of the 3D nature.
Cons: The thing that I liked the least about AutoCAD is just that some commands are not too easy to find and require a few digging into the menus to find the right command you need.

Overall, my experience with AutoCAD was powerful and professional, but demanding. It’s an extremely capable tool that excels at precision and detailed drafting, making it well suited for technical, architectural, and engineering work. Once you’re comfortable with the interface and commands, it offers great control over drawings and is reliable for handling complex projects. However, that power comes with a steep learning curve and time investment. Getting up to speed takes patience, and even experienced users often rely on shortcuts, templates, and custom workflows to stay efficient. For simpler tasks, AutoCAD can sometimes feel heavier than necessary, especially compared to newer or more specialized design tools. Overall, AutoCAD delivers a robust and industry‑standard drafting experience that’s ideal for professionals who need accuracy and flexibility. It’s most rewarding when used regularly and for complex work—but may feel overwhelming for casual users or those with lighter design needs.

The use of AutoCAD has resulted in a greater efficiency and accuracy for projects. Its widespread application means that files are often created and exported by other firms, making a subscription a complete necessity.
Pros: The capabilities of Autodesk products far exceed those of similar softwares. There is a reason why AutoCAD is so heavily utilized in the workplace and a huge part of that is its versatility. The cost does not feel steep when you pair it with unlimited applications and a library of resources to reference.
Cons: While this system is undoubtedly invaluable, the capacity in which you can utilize the software is directly linked to the time spent learning it. With nested menus, hyper-specific commands, and premade templates as just a few examples - AutoCAD requires an expertise that should not be undervalued.

With a properly trained staff working with Autocad is very productive and enjoyable. Prepares a complete set of plans and quantity takeoffs for bidding.
Pros: Autocad is simply the best software for preparing civil engineering plans in 2D and 3D. Easily shared .dwg drawing format.
Cons: The annual subscription cost seems to increase substantially. Moving to other software is not an option do to the training time invested and Autocad being the standard used by many firms.

I have used AutoCAD for 12 years now and never once even had to call technical support or have any issues. From updating to the newest software each year to keeping it up and going on multiple devices working in tandem, I never once had a software issue. Now hardware when plotting out a massive drawing..... that can be a different story.
Pros: I personally liked the exclusivity of it, which kept demand up for anyone AutoCAD savvy. In my opionion it is the pinnacle of software for technical creation that needs to be finite in details or measurements. What really sealed the deal is when they integrated BIMS and endless libraries for everything and anything. From textiles to furniture and specialty equipment, there is now a BIM for everything, which is so much better than a dedcade ago when you had to draw in everything yourself.
Cons: Some projects don't require measurements to be so finite therefore making it more time consuming for simplier tasks that don't require precision work. Or in other words trying to use this software to do things it can do but wasn't necessarily designed for.

Pros: It can be quite expensive but it's the industry standard for design. Weather its civil, electrical, mechanical or something else it is easy to use and offers lots of customization.
Cons: It can be pricey and if you are having a specific issue customer support might not be able to help you quickly without escalation first.

I use the Student Version for designing electrical systems and lighting layouts. While it is a powerful tool for precision drafting, the random freezes when inserting blocks can be very stressful when deadlines are close. However, being able to submit compatible .dwg files is essential for my university courses.
Pros: The access to the Student License with my institutional email is a lifesaver. For my electrical engineering projects, the layer management is perfect for separating lighting circuits from the architectural floor plan. It is the absolute standard in Panama, so mastering it is necessary for my career.
Cons: It has frustrating stability issues. Sometimes, even in simple files (like a small house plan), placing a single object/block causes the software to freeze indefinitely, forcing me to restart my entire PC. I also encounter a bug where I create a new object, but it simply doesn't appear on the screen, requiring me to do weird workarounds to make it usable.

I have experience using AutoCAD as a Engineer; used the software to create 2D and 3D drawings of structural components and also t make revisions to existing designs.
Pros: unmatched precision, efficiency through digital tools (like blocks & layers), and powerful 2D/3D design capabilities,
Cons: Users frequently cite several drawbacks to AutoCAD, but the most common complaints center on its high cost and subscription model, a steep learning curve, and comparatively limited 3D modeling capabilities.
Karan P. · Executive · Chemicals · December 28, 2025
Pros: This is the industry standard for when it comes to precision detailed fabrication drawings. It is reliable for P&IDs.
Cons: It lacks BIM capacities compared to Revit that offers modern BIM workflows. It can also be very tedious on large projects and increases the risk you mess up somewhere.

As an architect, AutoCAD is an essential tool for creating all types of drawings (floor plans, elevations, electrical layouts, ceiling plans, etc.). It is extremely useful, and I learned how to use it easily.
Pros: With its simplified interface, anyone can create any drawing they want, even if they have never used the program before.
Cons: Since my computer isn’t very powerful, my files occasionally suffer from bugs, particularly when working with large projects.
mohammed elamine c. · architect · Architecture & Planning · December 9, 2025
Using the software daily, it is easy to get comfortable. Ease of access is a big factor. AutoCAD offers unlimited customization options.
Pros: Having used the software for over twenty years, AutoCAD has been consistently improved and upgraded.
Cons: AutoCAD can be buggy. There are times where it totally locks up or crashes entirely. AutoDesk can do a better job detailing what is optimal for the best performance.

Using autocad for design drawings has increased my efficiency to execute designs of the site. I have used autocad to create: floorplans, elevations, electrical drawing, ceiling drawing, false ceiling drawing. Once the drawing is properly detailed it can be very hassle free to execute it in the site as vendors and contractors can read it easily. It creates a language that acts as a bridge between different stakeholders.
Pros: 1. Autocad is one of the most used software in my field- Interior Design. 2. It is very efficient to detail the technical aspects of the design. 3. It is used to create drawings for constructions such as plumbing, electrical, false ceiling plan, floor plan, elevation contributing in project management. 4. The extensive variety of commands make it easy to use.
Cons: 1. It requires lot of time and practice to build efficiency and speed. 2. Its user interface makes simple designs complex. 3. The subscription cost is little on higher side, making it little expensive for some people who aren't using it on regular basis.

This program aids in my design flow and has become an invaluable tool. I would recommend this to everyone who is involved in design. It not only helps on the front end, but saves a lot of time if you just need to tweak 2D drawings created from giant 3D assemblies.
Pros: I like how easy and intuitive this program is. There is basically no learning curve, and even if you do get stuck, it has a convenient search bar that works well. There is also plentiful support to be found on the Autodesk community website. I use it daily to import and export DXFs and DWGs that work seamlessly with SolidWorks and Adobe Illustrator. The last thing I will mention is how unique the selection tool is and how very helpful it is.
Cons: There really is nothing major that I dislike. There are a few minor things, such as not being able to have driving dimensional annotations, but that could be more of an intended choice. The only other thing is that it does not use the native file explorer very well, and sometimes it is a little tricky to find files on your computer inside the program.

AutoCAD has improved collaboration by allowing teams in my organization to create and share 2D and 3D models in one place.
Pros: In my current printing industry, AutoCAD has been an exceptional tool that help create and design 2D and 3D designs in various dimensions.
Cons: AutoCAD offers 256 varied colors for creating models - even though there are other alternatives with more complex colors, AutoCAD suits my creative design projects.
Stephen W. · Computer Aided Design Engineer · Printing · September 17, 2025

Overall, AutoCAD was an outstanding tool that delivered decades of reliable performance and was central to my work. It provided accuracy and capabilities that shaped the industry and justified its premium price. However, my experience ended once Autodesk shifted to a subscription-only model. Despite my significant financial investment over the years, I am now locked out of updates unless I agree to perpetual payments. For me, this business model overshadows the software’s strengths and has driven me away from using it altogether.
Pros: AutoCAD was an incredibly powerful and precise tool for technical drawing and design. It became the industry standard for a reason — offering accuracy, reliability, and a wide set of features that supported everything from architectural plans to detailed engineering work. The software was stable, professional-grade, and provided great value when ownership and upgrade options were available.
Cons: The move to a subscription-only model ended my use of the product. I originally purchased AutoCAD outright for over $6,000 and paid for every upgrade path for many years. That was a major investment in both time and money, which is now disregarded by forcing ongoing payments just to keep access. The subscription model feels unfair, erases the value of previous purchases, and shows little respect for long-term loyal users.

I find AutoCAD extremely useful in every aspect of life. Being a project engineer and having to delve into various aspects of drawings on a daily basis, AutoCAD is a go to for me. I started my drafting career in AutoCAD, and it will always be my go-to in the sense that the interface is easy to use.
Pros: It is most suitable for all forms Drawings in architecture as well as other engineering discipline. Also, it is user friendly in most cases, and the frequent update is worthy.
Cons: I find AutoCAD less useful and less meaningful while doing 3D works. It is not as smart as REVIT despite being from the same parent company Autodesk.
Bishnu A. · Project Engineer · Construction · August 4, 2025
I used it in school a lot and have done multiple training classes using it. It is a great program and really is the standard in its own field.
Pros: It is wildly easy to understand on a surface level. It is really intuitive and easy and as you look more into it, there are a lot of features that mean it does just about everything you could want it to do.
Cons: The price. I understand that the price is due to the amount of services that it provides, however I feel like it is a bit high considering that there isn't really an alternative software to use. I do however greatly appreciate that the student version is free. It makes it really easy to get started learning it.
