FOUNDATION helps firms manage construction accounting, payroll, and job costing with tools built for complex financial workflows. It’s most often used by small businesses with administrative and finance teams. Users value its union payroll support and customizable reporting. While the interface may require onboarding time, advanced modules like equipment tracking and service dispatch add operational depth.

Pros: I love the U.S. based customer support and I love how they are rolling out updates, new features, and new products consistently.
Cons: The software and add-ons are expensive, so it can be difficult for a small business to take the leap from QuickBooks.

Pros: The ability to extract data from the tool using ODBC Connection to create custom reporting outside of Foundation.
Cons: Constant bugs/issues that are not addressed timely or not tested thoroughly. Outdated technology that is not up to par with industry standards, very limited integration capabilities with other systems, awkward and cumbersome user interface.

Overall, we’ve had a very positive experience with Foundation. For construction companies with complex payroll, job costing, and reporting requirements, it’s one of the better industry-specific accounting systems available. The software is powerful, highly customizable, and clearly built with contractors in mind. While there are areas that could be modernized, particularly around foreign currency functionality, the strength of the core construction accounting features and the outstanding customer support make it a system we would still highly recommend.

Cons: The biggest limitation for us is foreign currency handling. If your company deals with Canadian vendors, international projects, or multi-currency transactions with any regularity, Foundation falls short in that area. There are workarounds, but they tend to be manual and cumbersome compared to what you’d expect from a modern ERP/accounting platform. Some parts of the system can also feel dated from a usability standpoint, and there can be a learning curve for new users because of how robust the software is. However, for construction-specific accounting, the tradeoff is usually worth it.

There is a lot of work to get set up and rolling, but overall it's worth it, if you are looking for accounting software that give detailed job cost reports
Pros: Really makes job costing easy. There is work involved to get everything set up, but once it's in...
Cons: It's a little out dated. It looks and feels like a 40 year old program. It seems to require a lot of "clicks" and "okays"

Overall, what stood out most was that FOUNDATION clearly understands how construction companies actually operate, and it’s built more for financial accuracy and job control than surface‑level simplicity—which is often exactly what construction accounting teams need.
Pros: Excellent job costing depth FOUNDATION gives very strong visibility into budget vs. actuals, committed costs, change orders, and job profitability. It feels designed for people who live inside job cost reports every day.
Cons: Many users say the system is powerful but hard to learn, especially for new staff or non-accounting users. Basic tasks can require multiple screens and steps, which hurts efficiency early on.

I have used it for about 4 years (at a previous employer also) and it works well but definitely could be some necessary updates.
Pros: I like how well it works with the construction industry. It is very good as far as tracking hours in payroll.
Cons: The scrolling on reports is difficult. One of my biggest complaints is the length of time it takes to get a call from support. We recently started using document imaging and have run into several hurdles to prevent us from moving forward and have to wait a couple days for a call once logging a call.
Patty F. · Payroll Manager · Construction · April 23, 2026
Pros: There are many reports that are very helpful. I also like the payroll process and how it can all be done in one location.
Cons: The time it takes for someone to get back to you with help. I had this issue prior and was assured that this had gotten better. There are times I have had to wait 3 days to get a call back.

The software is good, but there are things that need to be fixed. Example: Allow you to select multiple invoices from the same vendor paid as and eft, but record eft payments individually. This is time consuming if you have several that need to be paid to the same vendor. We recording cash receipts allow you to have a check box so that you can record them as 1 total deposit rather than record the cash receipt and then record the bank deposit. Rather than delete employees, vendors, customers and jobs, have a box that you check to inactive them so they don't show in the drop-downs (similar to the way you can in general ledger). Last year I was told some of the requests I wanted were being worked on. So far nothing.
Pros: Support is very good. Generally the representative who call you back are very knowledgeable. The software is easy to use. The on-line webinars are good, downloadable handouts are also very helpful. Needs to be more of them. Also, training classes for advanced queries, etc. need to be offered more often.
Cons: Very few enhancement requests. We have been using the software since 2020 and I have not seen any enhancements that make the job easier. This is very frustrating. I realize that you get 1000's of requests, but if you had a way for users to vote on requests you would have a better understanding of what the users want.
Gayle B. · Office Manager · Construction · April 20, 2026
Overall, our experience has been great. The team is very helpful and prompt when we have a question.
Pros: Have been using Foundation Software for 10+ years, very happy. Program is easy to use and the customer service is great.
Cons: I have not run into many issues other than just wishing I was able to customize some of the reports a bit more.
Kayla M. · Controller · Construction · April 20, 2026
Overall we have had a good experience with Foundation. We switched back to their P4C platform for payroll and it has been great.
Pros: Foundation is a good platform at keeping everything together, payroll, AP, AR, job costing and invoicing
Cons: I feel like Foundation has had the same interface for 20 years. It would be nice for it to be updated.
Melissa S. · Office Admin · Construction · April 15, 2026
The overall experience has been much needed improvement to our business. Foundation software is exactly what we needed to go to the next level.
Pros: The customer support is fabulous. I don't know how I would have gotten through the year without it.
Cons: One big struggle for us is in the area of the service department. The ability to not be able to comment on a service job in the app unless you are the lead tech is troubling. Sometimes another tech will arrive at the job to assist or drop off parts and they are not able to enter their time and comment.
Darren S. · CFO · Construction · April 14, 2026
Easy to use, great support team. Reporting could be better and easier to run queries, but overall good product.
Pros: easy to use and the integration of other platforms. On demand webinars as well as live support make it easy to learn.
Cons: How long requested updates take to be done, and the slowness of the payroll tax department to respond to late payments/reporting.
Kathy L. · HR and Payroll Manager · Construction · April 14, 2026
Responsive and helpful customer service. Program makes monthly billing a breeze and has reduced overall time with built in bids for jobs
Pros: Variety of reports, built in AIA format and unit price for billing, ability to add modules as our company grows
Cons: Unable to expand fields where information gets cut off i.e. Items on estimate bids sometimes the characters get cut off when we have multiple types of curb. So I can't tell when billing which item is Curb & Gutter Type 2 or Curb & Gutter Type 7 etc.
Sarah L. · Project Administrator · Construction · April 13, 2026
Overall, it is a pretty good system and ultimately does the job that we need it to. We do have to manage a lot outside of our accounting system such as changes to employees' benefits.
Pros: I like that we can pull certified payrolls directly from the system. The customer service is mostly very good and helpful.
Cons: It is a bit clunky and hard to see the details without digging in further. Finding the information, you need can be difficult. I cannot pull cash basis reports. Certified payrolls are slow to print and save. They system doesn't keep historical information well.
Lisa T. · Bookkeeper · Construction · March 3, 2026
Pros: Ease of use. Foundation is user friendly and easy to pick up. The product works well for all team members.
Cons: Probably some of the reporting limitations and ability to connect with other software solutions that perform functions Foundation does not offer.
Kyle G. · CFO · Construction · February 27, 2026
Tech Support is available to get through difficult areas. It works well with our project management software.
Pros: Great for electronic Certified Payroll reporting! We could not find another product that could meet requirements for government projects.
Cons: Some functions are complex and difficult to locate. It's not always obvious where to go to accomplish a task.
Jim s. · Controller · Construction · February 24, 2026
Overall my company has been using Foundations for about 15 years. Eveyone here seems to really like it
Pros: I love the tracking reports in foundations. Foundations is pretty easy to use. Sending our invoicing to contractors is really simple.
Cons: I don't like that things purged can't be retrieved by anyone. It would be nice if we would be able to have someone to unpurge....
Mandy S. · manager · Construction · February 24, 2026
Favorite software so far, good customer service. Knowledgeable people, helping and guiding with patience, no rush.
Pros: Easier to use than other software. Has many reports and abilities to electronically submit forms to IRS and Social Security Administration.
Cons: Don't have much experience to tell. I will be able to tell more after working here for at least one year.
Irina K. · Controller · Construction · February 17, 2026
Overall, I value Foundation for its accurate job costing, user-friendly interface, solid reporting tools, and the visibility it gives us into budgets, commitments, and project performance.
Pros: What I like the most is the ease of use, the ability to create customized reports with Data Genie, and the efficiency of customer support.
Cons: What I find challenging is that when we use custom formats, uploading them into the system and managing them is not as straightforward as using our standard lien releases or change order forms.
Stephany P. · Accounts Manager · Construction · February 16, 2026
Love the product, and the knowledgeable technical support team. Responses are quick and professional.
Pros: Foundation is designed for job costing in the construction industry. It also allows for all documents relating to a job to be stored in one place, making it easy to find everything related to a project in one place. Easily integrates with AIA invoicing and A/R management. Reports are professional and customizable and present a professional appearance to any who review them.
Cons: Some areas require a dual entry process. And some of the additional modules that are supposed to sync with Foundation tend to be a bit glitchy.
Deborah V. · Director of Accounting · Construction · February 16, 2026
Overall, my experience has been very positive. FOUNDATION gives us strong visibility into our numbers and helps keep projects financially on track. The reporting is clear and useful for management decisions. For a construction company that wants accurate job costing and integrated accounting, this software stands out.
Pros: FOUNDATION works well for us because it is built specifically for construction. The job costing is detailed and reliable, which is critical when you are managing labor, materials, subcontractors, and equipment across multiple jobs. We also use other FOUNDATION products like Vendrix for credit cards, WorkMax for time tracking, and HRHQ. Having everything connected makes a big difference. Credit card transactions flow into the system, field time from WorkMax ties into payroll and job costs, and HRHQ helps keep employee information organized. It feels like a full ecosystem instead of separate software that does not talk to each other.
Cons: There is a learning curve, especially in the beginning. It is a powerful system and requires proper setup and training to use it the right way. Once it is implemented correctly, it becomes much easier to manage, but new users need time to get comfortable.
Joshua C. · Controller · Construction · February 16, 2026
Pros: FOUNDATION is a solid accounting solution tailored to construction companies. It handles job costing, payroll, and financial reporting in a way that fits construction-specific needs.
Cons: The interface feels dated compared to newer platforms. Reporting is powerful, but pulling custom reports can take time to learn.
Mark B. · VP of Sales and Estimating · Construction · January 25, 2026
Overall it has been a decent experience, many things left to be desired but does enough to keep our business going smoothly.
Pros: We like that Foundation offers an Equipment module that allows us to track items at the EQ level and by service code. Tracking fuel purchases against equipment is very important for grading companies and it appears most places like to do it at the GL level instead of equipment level so it is nice that it works directly in the system.
Cons: There is a large amount of inflexibility with Foundation. Custom reports are very limited and even though you capture a lot of information at all levels of operation there is not an easy to way to get the information you want. We also haven't seen a quality of life Software improvement in 7 years and it has largely stayed the same. Seems their preferred method of updates is to buy another software and try to bolt it on but still doesn't fix the underlying problem that the accounting system could use some updates.
Mark S. · HR and IT · Civil Engineering · January 19, 2026
I like it, the cost keeps going up and now everything is an add on. But I like that it offers a lot of different components like the pr taxes and w2 filings.
Pros: it was easy to learn and use. The support team are great and the online help by topics are really good. I also know that if I do need help, I can have Support help me, support is the key, they get back to me very fast! I like how some support people really know what they're doing in Foundations and have knowledge in taxes and construction accounting. It's helpful!!!
Cons: Trying to make custom reports, not having a lot of different elements to create a report. Not being able to reprint some of payroll reports.
Joy O. · Accounting Manager · Construction · January 12, 2026
We have been very pleased with the software, the level of customer service and the price point as well. I have and would recommend Foundation Software to others.
Pros: Foundation Software has great customer service and support. Their staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. The cost of the software is a great value for the capabilities of the software and it room for growth that has allowed us to scale up in our business.
Cons: We are opting in to new products/add Ons as Foundation has been offering them such HRHQ, Foundation Pay, Safety HQ. There have been growing pains and sometime these have been clunky or down. I would hope that Foundation allocates more resources to these new products to help ensure that they are successful and we can continue to utilize them.
