RSMeans Data Online is the choice that helps us govern all data solutions.
Pros: RSMeans Data Online has accurate data preparation measures.
Cons: RSMeans Data Online is fruitful and nothing contradicting.
Christina R. · ICT Manager · Medical Devices · December 3, 2024
Pros: I really like that it bases the cost on the location of the project.
Cons: While it is a very detailed software, it's not very intuitive, nor easily self-taught. I think if I had it to do all over again I would have taken the paid training.
Curtis S. · Owner/ Designer · Architecture & Planning · February 6, 2023
Pros: Intuitive features, lots of options, i do like to cost per sf estimator
Cons: A bit difficult to migrate estimates to other software, otherwise using RS means within its self is quite a breeze

All in all it was ok I could say.
Pros: The trial was free, so thr was wonderful. Ease of access was decent as well
Cons: The least about this software I liked, was that the free trial was limited on fearures
Terri B. · Personal Assistant · Human Resources · October 27, 2022
Pros: Everything is in one place. Nice additional options. After you learn the structure of data, it gets quite easy.
Cons: Not easy for a completely new user. Search index is sometimes tricky.
Jack S. · Estimator · Construction · November 4, 2021
Pros: There is more cost information in the database than I could have imagined. The assemblies look to have some promise, but I have not had the opportunity to use them much.
Cons: The information is overwhelming at first and there is not much in the way of tutorial or basics available at start-up. The information is very specific to technical terminology - typically that found in A&E rather than field knowledge.
Thomas J. · Estimator · Construction · October 7, 2021
Pros: relatively easy to use. I was able to figure out the software with minimal instruction.
Cons: sometimes pricing is confusing. especially for drywall
Jeff J. · program officer · Non-Profit Organization Management · October 7, 2021
Provide independent cost estimates to our Government clients
Pros: Automatic calculations and reporting. Searchability of line items
Cons: It csts extra to be able to add my own line items/cost datat.
Jack M. · Manager, EE Dept. · Architecture & Planning · October 6, 2021
Although it has some shortcomings, it worked for me in general.
Pros: I used the software for maintenance purposes. It shows repair, replacement, and preventative maintenance frequencies of the items, material cost, and manhour need.
Cons: sometimes I couldn't find what I need in the maintenance section. The construction section includes lots of items but I can't say the same thing for the maintenance section. Also, in the software, we can see component details of the items (for example, if it is a door repair item, details show change hinges, replace lockset, etc.). However, there is no option to export this information on an excel file. In addition, the units are imperial. A simple converter can be implemented so that people can switch to the metric unit system.

It helps as a guideline to pricing
Pros: Ability to change cities. productivity shown. set out as one would expect for trade format
Cons: Some pricing is off. Roofing pricing needs better expansion.
Christopher H. · Associate Principal · Construction · October 6, 2021
I have a hard time getting the costs that i need. I get numbers from subs and this is not keeping up.
Pros: I like that I am able to use it for the government work.
Cons: The government does not know how to read the reports that are generated.
chance h. · pm · Construction · October 5, 2021
Pros: Guidelines, overall average cost for most products
Cons: Hard to understand between product and labor cost
Anhony P. · Estimator / Planner · Construction · October 5, 2021
This software keeps the client in the loop and lets them be a part of the selection of products and scope of work.
Pros: Easy to search for products and match them with the scope of work.
Cons: Cannot find everything I need and must use alternate source. This is understandable, especially when the client request is for a particular brand of equipment.
Patrick A. · Sales/estimator · Construction · October 5, 2021
Pros: Extensive cost database, up to date cost data and convenience of use.
Cons: Line item estimating is tedious, cannot justify the cost of full version due to limited usage .
Tracy R. · Building Official · Construction · October 5, 2021
I am very happy with it. It is great product for us
Pros: It is very important for us to estimate our projects. RSMeans give us what we are looking for
Cons: It should be more resources of YouTube to learn the software for new users
Muzaffer G. · Director · Construction · October 5, 2021
I use RS means for a second or third check before I submit my estimates to the clients and because of the reputation it has established helps my justification of estiamtes
Pros: I appreciate that way that it uses the standard divisions to organize the estimates which is expected, however sometimes it is clumsy to navigate back and forth
Cons: When creating an estimate I would like to be able to navigate through the divisions quicker. Working on a medical university setting I find that the the program is good for basic costing but it is difficult to compare the complications of the environment that I work in, for example, I can be involved in project on campus in active lab spaces, medical equipment/chemical usage and storage, and even nuclear materials, RS means can not help with the complications that we deal with in these scenarios.
chad J. · Sr. Project Manager · Architecture & Planning · October 5, 2021
Overall it does the job we need it to do. However, I am not overwhelmed with satisfaction.
Pros: How I can break down my estimates into individual lines items
Cons: The process of changing the city/state locations
Timothy H. · Estimator · Real Estate · October 5, 2021
Pros: Rs means has a good database with a timely update with the latest prices.
Cons: Rs Means is not best with the user friendly
Shobhit S. · Estimator · Construction · October 4, 2021
Construction Estimates on Governmental projects.
Pros: the search engine is easy to use, if sometimes confusing in terminology
Cons: The database does not include all of the items/services that I frequently deal with in renovation/rehabilitation
Albert L. · Project Manager · Architecture & Planning · October 1, 2021
I like the web version. It provides what I need without having another piece of software to maintain, update and take up space on my laptop.
Pros: I like the ability to edit the square foot estimate.
Cons: We are a small firm and do custom residential as well as light commercial. I wish I had the ablility to do both with the standard package.
Darryl B. · Principal · Architecture & Planning · October 1, 2021
Easy to put together accurate estimates
Pros: Cost information is detailed and accurate. I have used this for several projects and it has proven to be accurate when compared to bids received.
Cons: Reporting functions need help. I have yet to be able to export properly into excel or create a custom report that looks like it makes sense.
Michael B. · Vice President · Architecture & Planning · October 1, 2021
The overall experience was satisfactory. The program was easy to learn, however the database was so limiting and the costs questionably low in light of the current market.
Pros: I liked how the program allows you to download the costs for a project into an excel document.
Cons: The library was limited so I would often have to choose a similar product. Many times the alternate was a less expensive simpler version of the item I was trying to price out. This was detrimental to me as I was required to use RS MEANS to calculate construction costs through a government program. As a result, I will be credited at a lower amount than the actual construction cost.
Ly T. · Development Manager · Construction · October 1, 2021
Very good. Prefer over hard copy books.
Pros: Easy to use filters and creating new projects.
Cons: Some difficulty with multiple users and project database is a bit confusing.
Dj C. · Architect · Architecture & Planning · October 1, 2021
Online cost estimating has allowed me to save estimates, and come back to update them.
Pros: Ability to create estimates based on assemblies, components, or square footage, using up-to-date data
Cons: Lacking "help" functionality (or it's limited or difficult to find).
Jon L. · Senior Associate · Architecture & Planning · October 1, 2021
