Moodle is the gold standard for open-source learning management systems. For schools, universities, and organizations that need a fully customizable and self-hosted e-learning platform, it delivers everything needed and more. The four-star rating reflects its outstanding feature set tempered by the technical investment required to get the most out of it.
Pros: Moodle is incredibly powerful for building structured e-learning experiences. The ability to create courses with quizzes, assignments, forums, grading rubrics, and completion tracking all in one platform is hard to match. Being open-source means full control over customization and no licensing costs, which makes it especially attractive for educational institutions and organizations with technical teams. The plugin ecosystem also extends its capabilities significantly.
Cons: The initial setup and configuration require a solid technical background — hosting, installation, and maintenance are not beginner-friendly. The user interface feels dated compared to modern LMS alternatives, and the learning curve for both administrators and end users can be steep. Without proper theming and customization, the default look feels uninspiring for students.

Moodle remains a powerful and flexible learning management system that continues to improve with community-driven updates. The addition of better mobile responsiveness and improved Moodle App functionality has made it more accessible. It's particularly well-suited for universities and organizations that need full control over their e-learning environment without licensing fees.

Pros: Moodle's open-source flexibility is its greatest strength — it can be customized extensively to fit any educational institution's needs. The course management tools, assignment submission system, quiz builder, and discussion forums are comprehensive and well-suited for blended and fully online learning environments.
Cons: The default interface can feel dated and unintuitive compared to more modern LMS platforms. Initial setup and configuration requires technical expertise, and the mobile experience is not as smooth as dedicated apps. Plugin management can also become complex when running multiple integrations.

Overall, Moodle allowed me to easily check my grades, turn in assignments, and receive communication from professors in a timely fashion eve if I missed class. The interface was a little outdated but it had all the features you needed and rarely had any bugs.
Pros: Moodle was a great tool when it came to not only checking grades, but stuent-teacher interaction as well. Professors were able to communicate deadlines and whatnot to students, even if they were absent. When I used Moodle, it was always very easy to use, and never had many bugs or issues.
Cons: What I liked least about Moodle was the interface. It was very outdates, but it did everything that it needed to do. The features all worked but it was just an outdated system visually.

Its been good overall, the app is simple and the colour/organization is very user friendly. I like the calendar feature where you can see all the deadlines all at once.
Pros: I liked the simple system. Its very customisable for the professors/ tutors, and the assignment submission and viewing grade is simple too.
Cons: The assignment deadlines notifications are so delayed, most of the time the notification doesnt even come through the app bit through emails. And the Emails arrive after the deadline passes which causes a big issue of missing the deadline.

My overall experience with Moodle has been good. It kept all my course materials, assignments, grades, and announcements in one place, which made it easier for me to stay organized throughout the semester. I liked that I could quickly check deadlines and see updates from my professors without having to use multiple platforms. At the same time, the interface sometimes felt a bit outdated, and the layout changed a lot depending on how each professor set up their course, so navigation wasn’t always consistent. But overall, Moodle helped me manage my classes effectively and stay on top of my academic work
Pros: What I liked most about Moodle was how easy it was to access everything I needed for my courses in one place. I could quickly find lecture slides, assignments, readings, and announcements without having to search through multiple platforms. I also liked that I could track my deadlines and see my grades as soon as professors posted them. Overall, it made staying organized and keeping up with my classes much easier.
Cons: What I liked least about Moodle was that the interface sometimes felt outdated and not very intuitive. Certain pages took a few extra clicks to find, and different professors organized their course pages in completely different ways, which made navigation inconsistent. I also found that notifications weren’t always reliable, so I had to double‑check things manually to make sure I didn’t miss updates or deadlines.

Knowledgable. I learned a lot as a student user once back when I was in college and now as an Administrator.
Pros: The chat/messaging feature. As an admin, I am satisfied with this because I can send a broadcast to all my users.
Cons: I use Moodlecloud. The feature I like the least is the process of creating the performance usage report. I discovered when I first extract that information that there are columns that are not relevant - I want main details such as how many times a user logged in and how long they were logged in and the courses they viewed/attempted, the functions they used the most and all those.

Made student teacher interaction very easy and efficient. Value for money. Help use a lot during Covid issues. Customer support is quick.
Pros: Easy to hover our different subjects and assignments. User and admin have different rights which can be edited per user.
Cons: Some bugs issues while uploading the test paper with secondary application for plagiarism check. Phone app not that great.

I've used moodle for school to access course materials, complete assignment and keep track of my progress.
Pros: All courses materials in one place Easy to submit assignment online Helps track deadline and progress Accessible anytime from phone to computer
Cons: Can be confusing at first for new users Sometimes slow or takes time to load Layout canfeel a bit outdated Notification arenot already clear

It has been great to implement it as part of my CoEs to help people to train and have some materials available
Pros: It continues to be a good option to create in-house training, going further than expected, and compared with other platforms
Cons: There are no cons; this is a tool that keeps the required innovation and keeps it simple to use. I don´t think in a scenario to don´t use it
Jesús Gonzalo V. · Senior Software Engineer · Information Technology and Services · March 23, 2026
Pros: It has been a while since I used Moodle. I do recall its colorful presentation and ease of use. The students were also receptive to the platform
Cons: I feel that other Learning Managmenet Systems like Canvas accomplish exactly what Moodle does, but in a prettier fashion
Essence W. · University Researcher · E-Learning · March 19, 2026
Super cost effective with a huge library of plug in options available, and what feels like huge community support, I would use Moodle more if we build out more LMS for our business. We're not quite there yet, but for a simple set up, it's worked great for us.
Pros: Easy to use and start learning management system that I researched and ultimatley used to build a training environment to teach a workflow process in my business.
Cons: It had a steeper learning curve than some other plug and play learning models, but it was the most cost effective choice for what I wanted to do.
Chris L. · Operations · Publishing · March 18, 2026
Pros: Flexible learning platform with course management, assignments, grading tools, and strong support for online classes.
Cons: Interface can feel outdated and navigation may be confusing for new users without proper setup or guidance
Therrin W. · Tutor · E-Learning · March 16, 2026
It was utilized by my department for a few quarters but was only used for a short time and replaced by google classroom.
Pros: Very flexible, free Learning Management System that gives plug-in support. Convenient for large online classes.
Cons: It has a steep learning curve, outdated interface and in my opinion, required a great deal of support from my IT department.

We used Moodle as a shared space when I studied at a university. We used it mostly for everything: publiching teaching materials, asignments, homeworks, thesis there.
Pros: It's a platform that gathers all the information in one place. All the disciplines, assignments, homeworrks, and teaching materials are published there. You can also look up people there (teachers or students). We also used it a lot when we had online classes (during Covid).
Cons: The mobile version is not very adapted, and the interface, and the design could have been better. Otherwise, it surves its purposes as a platform for sharing materials. It could have also been a bit more well-structured and more straightforward.

I was a student who used Moodle for 7 years while completing my 2 degrees. It was a simple portal to access with your class requirements and assignments all laid out for you.
Pros: The platform was easy to use and I used it at two different institutions. It was simple to interact with your instructor, and great to see all your assignments due and graded.
Cons: I didn't experience any dislikes as a end user, and my instructors liked have a template for there classes.

I have personally used Moodle during my classes with Library Juice Academy, so everything is strictly online, but I have to admit it has a been a wonderful and easy experience so far.
Pros: Everything is labeled exactly as it should be so I would consider this software to have an ease of use, very user friendly, and I like how you can view the grading and assignments in live time as well be able to have student-teacher interaction through the software as well. It's a perfect system to use for online schooling.
Cons: Having only seen it from the user side, I'm not sure if it is actually hard to work with through the administrative side. All I can say so far are good things about Moodle.

Moodle's value of learning and providing knowledge to their users as it provides best distance learning and real time provision of learning materials to help us access learning easly
Pros: Assessment an d learning materials updates are really heart touching and helps the user to fell more comfortable
Cons: course and file format, this hinders some user to not well enjoy the platform that needs some changes which aren't much
Anonymous User · Teacher · Education Management · February 15, 2026
Enjoyable to work with but did not fit my needs. Not a lot of customization options and somewhat outdated.
Pros: I tried Moodle on a trial basis to see if it would work for onboarding customers to share information on what to expect when signing on with our company.
Cons: It did not perform as expected but that is likely because it isn't the right program. I could see benefits in other facets.
Teresa S. · Designer · Construction · February 13, 2026
Pros: Moodle is still an efficient way to communicate with students and offer asynchronistic learning. It meets mandated accessibility standards and is integrated with Ellucian, our campus technology solution.
Cons: Videos sometimes take a long time to buffer despite good internet connection. Customizing environments can be tricky.
Kristin G. · Archives Manuscript Curator · Higher Education · February 10, 2026
Pros: Student teacher interaction, user and administrative management and value for money as well as easy to use features and UI.
Cons: Nothing bad to say really. I think moodle is excellent, especially once the bugs are tweaked, im sure it will succeed.
Sarah P. · Owner · Cosmetics · January 26, 2026
Extremely useful in finding final grades and the commentary from teacher allows one to know where mistakes were made and where you can better yourself
Pros: Relative ease of use after getting used to the program with no recurring bugs and good for student teacher interaction
Cons: Initially when starting to use the program, it can be slightly confusing with not all modules information readily available
Lynworth v. · Teacher · E-Learning · January 24, 2026
Moodle is a solid tool that gets the job done for university life. It provides all the necessary features for a Computer Science student, but it desperately needs a modern visual update, and also , the files submit system , should be updated.
Pros: As a computer science student, I really value the learning platform because it serves as an all-in-one hub where I can access all my course materials, submit some of my assigments. It has a organized interface, supporting multiple file formats and activities.
Cons: The platform feels quite outdated, often requires too many clicks to locate specific documents. The mobile experience is also somewhat limited compared to the desktop version, with inconsistent notifications. Also, when I try to add a file and submit it, a lot of time it takes to many clicks to confirm it , I have already missed some deadlines because I forgot 1 of 5 confirms.

Overall, Moodle is a dependable training management system that excels in flexibility and control. once properly setup, it supports grading amd communication effectively.
Pros: Moodle is very flexible and well suited for structured learning environments. It helped us deliver and manage safety training modules in a structured and reliable way.
Cons: The user interface feels dated and can be unintutive for new users. Setup and configuration require time and technical knowledge, especially for administrators.
Junaid E. · National IT Manager · Hospitality · January 22, 2026
My overall experience with moodle is fairly limited. It was used as a platform for one course I took, however most universities I work with use canvas or blackboard. I think it’s a good option for private courses online.
Pros: Noodle provides an online platform for setting up and organizing course content. It is accessible and secure. Good online support.
Cons: The thing I like least about Moodle is that it is not widely used by the public educational institutions that I work with. Instead they use Canvas or Brightspace.
