Pros: The VM backup software has been a game-changer for our IT infrastructure. It provides fast, reliable backups with minimal resource impact on our virtual environments. The interface is intuitive, scheduling is flexible, and the support for various hypervisors (like VMware and Hyper-V) is seamless. Instant recovery and granular restore options save us significant downtime in critical situations.
Cons: Initial setup required some technical knowledge, and integration with certain cloud storage providers could be smoother. Some advanced features are locked behind higher-tier plans.

Pros: With VM Backup, we not only enjoy backup services but it also comes with search and discovery features. The automatic backup makes this tool better. I like that we never have to worry about data loss.
Cons: So far, I have no serious dislikes or bad experiences to list.

Pros: It did what it was supposed to and backed our servers up to our chosen media each night. Once it was setup, the backups ran very consistently, with little need for adjustment or error correction. We had very few failed backups.
Cons: Configuration is missing a lot of granular options, making it harder to do things you may want to do with your backups. Configuring backups can be a pain due to this oversimplification.

It's a very good choice, at a very competitive price. Easy to use, works well, interface simple and clean.
Pros: VM Backup allows you to backup you virtual machines in the possible easiest way. Just install the program on a windows server (not client) and follow the instructions, you will set VM backup very quickly. First add the node(s) which contains the VM, then add the backup storages. With a simple drag and drop you configure the VM to backup and their destinations. Then you set the time and I suggest also to configure a daily report via email. Restoring a backup is a very easy task, you can also choose from restoring it in a sandbox instead of the production environment. I use VM Backup with VMWare and HyperV environments, no problems at all. Support is excellent (via email or chat).
Cons: there is nothing I don't like about VM Backup

We needed a backup solution that would work for remote locations and did not need all of the "extras" that some products have that end up pushing costs up. This fit the bill fairly well and was pretty easy to use. It was overall flexible enough to allow us to backup direct to our NAS's and restore files fairly easy. If you are looking for a lower cost solution that can do a good job backing up VM's I would give Altaro a hard look. If you need it for a lot of small sites I would look at their central console though.
Pros: We needed a backup solution that would work for remote locations and did not need all of the "extras" that some products have that end up pushing costs up. This fit the bill fairly well and was pretty easy to use. It was overall flexible enough to allow us to backup direct to our NAS's and restore files fairly easy.
Cons: We purchased approximately 25 copies and used them at all of our remotes and at the initial purchase they had no way to manage them all via a central console. This has since changed but last I checked it adds a nice bit to the cost if you want it as an addon. Some of their scheduling screens cab be a bit weird to figure out.

Overall a very good backup solution for a great price.
Pros: - Easy to deploy as an MSP - Support is more than excellent. Direct response and highly skilled technicians. - Easy of use
Cons: - More detailed error messaging - Endpoint backup to the VM Backup location. (This was promised in the early days of Altaro)

The product is simple to use and reliable. I've used it for quite a few years, and it has definitely made my life easier when things have gone sideways.
Pros: The software is easy to configure, quick and does a good job backing up the VM's. File level (including single exchange emails) restores are easy and quick. Restoring an entire server is equally simple. It has definitely saved me on several occasions.
Cons: The offsite facility could use some work, specifically with regard to using the offsite server. If you do get corruption in the offsite server, you've pretty much lost your offsite backups and need to start from scratch.
Steve C. · VP of IT · Non-Profit Organization Management · August 2, 2022
We backup 6 hosts we over 40 VMs Onsite and offsite, and it works really well, no complains, also it is a very goood way to test new environments by restoring backups from any server.
Pros: What I most like about it, is the pricing model per Host instead of VM, it is very similar to the competitor, but has better pricing, its easy to try before buying, it is super intuitive to set it up, you don't even need to read the how to documentation, because is is really easy to use.
Cons: Some times the Altaro Services drops or Backups stops working (don't understand exactly why) SO You have to contact support (that is excellent and immediate) to solve it. This is the only reason we have been paying for the continuous support.

Pros: Ease to use and reliability. accuracy and support
Cons: I want if Altaro have Phone support instead of chat
Mandeep M. · IT Technician · Government Administration · August 2, 2022
Pros: This software works well with our network setup. We have both off-site backups and virtual and this software helps to maintain this set up well.
Cons: There is nothing I can think of to change this software for the better
Johnathon T. · Business Manager · Telecommunications · August 2, 2022
My overal experience with this Software is Positive. No negative feelings and we have it running at a lot of our customers, most installations just run, notifications keep coming in, and backups are made. We sometimes test it , and every time the backup can be restored. Not losing sleep over this.
Pros: I liked the easy, no fuss install. being up and running in 15 minutes.
Cons: It used to be that the backups were easily accessible, vhd files in a subfolder, nowadays it's more complex, I guess because of regulations/ security. I liked how it was before, that way I could even use the backed up VHD as any VHD. Most of the functionality is now already in Altaro, so there is less need for it. But would have been nice to have. But to be honest I don't miss it.

Pros: Ease of Restore and offsite backups. Particularly like the offsite server software being free
Cons: Support is often difficult due to the quality of the phone calls - noisy lines. Would like more that two options for offsite backup locations.
Andy B. · Director · Computer Networking · August 2, 2022
Pros: It is easy to use, backups just work without any problems, and there have never been any problems during a restore.
Cons: Templates would be great to not have to make the same settings for every VM
christian b. · CEO · Computer Software · August 2, 2022
Pros: It is easy to use. Die Funktionen sind ausreichend und das das Cloud Backup funktioniert gut.
Cons: RMM Integration is missing. Direkte Sicherung der VMs zu einem Cloud Speicher.
Sebastian S. · CIO · Computer & Network Security · August 1, 2022
very good
Pros: Value, Easy of use, Robust, Value for money
Cons: Some bugs, problem with NAS storage backup store

I've been very pleased with Altaro VM Backup for my VMware ESXI network. Other backup packages were either way too simple or way too expensive and too complicated. I'm not primarily a network administrator, I'm a software engineer, so I don't want to have to understand all the intricacies of complex backups. I just want to be able to set up a reliable backup that happens in an automated way and notifies me in a clear fashion if the backup completes and warns me if it doesn't complete. Altaro hit all the right balance of those features for our small company.
Pros: The price is great for a small business that needs decent backup software with a good feature set. The interface is easy to use even if creating backups is not your primary job. The daily notifications are great and summarize what's happened to make it easy to see if anything needs your attention without devoting a lot of time to reading the email.
Cons: Needs occasional hand-holding. For a couple reasons the backups will fail once or twice a quarter. Sometimes it's due to needing to reauthenticate with my offsite storage on a Synology array but other times it's because the Altaro services stop working on the backup server so I have to stop and restart them.
Steve H. · Code Mercenary · Electrical/Electronic Manufacturing · August 1, 2022
Pros: The product is very simple to operate and provides a great value while also making secure backups that are recoverable all the time.
Cons: Nothing so far. The product just gets better over time.
Emilio N. · IT Director · Consumer Goods · August 1, 2022
The backup of customer servers to our own premises was the ultimate goal and this has been achieved at an affordable rate to use and our customers - other solutions were just not user friend at all.
Pros: The MSP pricing is excellent compared to all others and very simple to get my head around. Simply buying a license per server backed up is much easier than worry about cost per GB and cost per CPU core that some others think is normal.
Cons: On the MSP dashboard managing hosts regards licencing is a little tedious and confusing. Simply converting an existing installation from the 2 guest to MSP version is a hassle and not obvious how to do without a lot of trial and error to work it out.
David D. · IT Guy · Information Technology and Services · August 1, 2022
Super satisfying - especially the world-class support - be it chat or phonesupport.
Pros: I never thought that i'll be able to have a backup up and running in under 15 minutes. The GUI is neat and tidy and self-explanatory in most parts that it is very satisfying working with Altaro VM Backup. It doesn't take much to convince customers into choosing Altaro - most of the time a trial is more than sufficient. There's just so much Altaro has to offer - sandbox restores, boot from backup even replication and offsite storage ...
Cons: The only, minor thing i'd have on my wishlist would be better reporting capabilities like: "storage used per VM backup", "Error reports" etc.
Alexander W. · Technical Director · Information Technology and Services · August 1, 2022
Pros: The software is easy to use and fully automated. The continuous protection and replication features to an offsite server are included and fantastic. We are able to have complete system image backups to another location, all within Altaro.
Cons: Sometimes the error messages are not very helpful, but the support from altaro is great, and they are always on hand to assist if needed right from within the product.
Mark R. · Managing Director · Information Technology and Services · August 1, 2022
We are very satisfied to use Altaro for our end-customers and we are backingup a lot of machines1
Pros: The easy of use, price compared to other solutions and it's a complete solution, MSP model
Cons: Some function of unmutable DR backup would be fine!
Bart H. · Sr accountmanager · Internet · August 1, 2022
Very good will move some other customers over when approved.
Pros: The main positive is support, it is amazingly quick and the agents are helpful. The speed and data compression is also very good.
Cons: Very limited for physical server backups. Its essentially a P2V but still works.
Saeed L. · Solutions Architect · Information Technology and Services · August 1, 2022
Altaro has been very easy to use and I have been able to successfully restore full running VM's when needed so I am a big believer in the product.
Pros: What I like most about Altaro is the new ability to backup direct to Azure Cloud Storage accounts. This has been a game changer for us in our DR plan. It allows us to feel comfortable that we have local and cloud versions of our backups. That is a killer feature at the Altaro Price point.
Cons: The only con I have is that we have had some occasional issues when using large USB devices for local backup. They seem to produce alot more errors with Altaro that with previously used products. Usually a reformat of the drive and the system seems to function well with it again. Just something we keep an eye on.
