Canopy helps small accounting firms manage client relationships, documents, and tax workflows in one place. It’s most used by finance and admin teams in small businesses, especially in accounting and education. Users highlight the secure client portal and document storage as standout features. Pricing complexity and limited QuickBooks Desktop integration are common drawbacks. Canopy recently added eSignature templates and new automation tools.

Overall, I am highly satisfied with Canopy. It has become an essential part of my daily operations and is especially well-suited for accounting and tax preparation work. The platform delivers strong functionality, good client experience, and reliable support, making it a valuable tool for professionals in the field.
Pros: As an accountant and tax preparer, I find Canopy to be an excellent tool that I use daily. It’s perfectly suited for my needs and helps streamline my workflow significantly. The platform enables small businesses or solo practitioners to stay organized and operate with the efficiency of a larger firm. The engagement module is particularly useful, it may not be perfectly customizable, but it is more than sufficient for most needs. I also appreciate the client portal, which clients find easy to use and reassuring in terms of data security.
Cons: While the engagement module works well overall, it does have some limitations in customization. Additionally, the AI chat support is not always accurate, which can sometimes slow things down. However, this is balanced out by the responsiveness and helpfulness of the customer support team when direct assistance is needed.

it has been great. The support we have received from our reps has been outstanding. [sensitive content hidden] was our onboarding rep and did an excellent job answering questions and guiding us through every step.
Pros: Canopy is a comprehensive program that takes the place of 6 programs we used to use. The learning curve for canopy is quite easy. Our clients like it because they can more readily communicate with the tax preparers, unload documents, review the tax return before it is ready to be signed, pay the invoice for the prep and sign the document all in one place. This system we estimate will save us about 6k per month.

Cons: Preparing everything in advance to upload into canopy. It is very tedious organizing almost four thousand files and determining who is active and not active
Neal B. · Office Manager · Accounting · January 14, 2026
Organization of files in Canopy are very reliable and easy to go back and retrieve anything you need. Putting time in is taking longer than I expected. It needs more organizing and thinking from people who created this wonderful tool.
Pros: Organization of files in Canopy are very reliable and easy to go back and retrieve anything you need.
Cons: Putting time in is taking longer than I expected. It needs more organizing and thinking from people who created this wonderful tool.

So great! Improved our Firm from the Get Go! I loved that I can see my teams outstanding and completed work in my dashboard.
Pros: Client/Firm Management System all in one! Love that we can do billing, client support, and workflows!
Cons: If/Then statements would be bice to have in Workflows and mass updating a workflow type when making a change.
Carrie N. · Tax Administrative manager · Accounting · January 6, 2026
Worth the time and expense to manage your clients and tasks. I don't use the invoicing because it doesn't connect to QB desktop, but all in all, I am so thankful for its ability to track and organize, as well as give clients access to their files 24/7.
Pros: It was fairly simple to learn and helped us get all of our client management in one place. Their support team is fabulous, often responding within moments, and resolving issues (which are fairly rare) sooner than I expect. The ability to securely share and receive files from clients is a game-changer!
Cons: The hardest part of Canopy is using the templates and automations. I'm a bit of a computer geek, so I enjoyed that process, but I can see some people finding it cumbersome to learn. The recent revamp has been a bit of a struggle to understand, as well, but I'm confident we'll get used to it soon.

I'm trying NOT to switch because my clients are already used to the client portal but smart vault/Liscio other products recommended by[sensitive content hidden] seem to work better and easier
Pros: It could be an all-in-one system for running accounting/tax/tax resolution firm. My clients are used to the client portal, so it is hard to switch them to another product. Emails go into Canopy but attaching to a task is either possible or impossible
Cons: Hard to learn. Task Screen to see what work is done, in progress etc. is impossible...I've gone back to a google doc. The Task Screen has columns Task and Task with Sub-Task for each entry which doesn't tell you anything and takes up main space in the screen. Would be helpful if the Column Header Task could show the TYPE of TASK like Tax, Accounting, Tax Resolution or name a special project. Then you could sort based on type of work. Sub Task Column is useless and unnecessary. Videos are too much of an overview. Customer Service is impatient and just refer you to videos and help which i have already reviewed. There are no definitions of terms used in help section.

Overall Canopy is perfect for my small business. The task management and workflows work well for my small team.
Pros: Canopy is easy to setup and utilize. My customers find it intuitive to use as well. Also support has been accessible and helpful.
Cons: When clients set up their login info. Sometimes it seemed the reset password didn’t work as expected and we had to contact support.
Pam H. · Owner and tax preparer · Accounting · December 27, 2025
Pros: Clients love it, the UI is great and it's super user friendly! We do almost every important function of the business inside of Canopy and it has become a great resource for us!
Cons: I do wish Canopy had the option to assign client numbers to clients. I also wish that the engagement credits had more price drops for firms with a larger number of clients.
Robert N. · Partner · Accounting · December 26, 2025
It has been overall useful. Once I get clients to start using the portal it will benefit us all . I would purchase it again .
Pros: I like That everything is mostly in one place . Secure for my clients . I like that clients have an app they can access and that I have one too .
Cons: Learning curve was steep for me and my clients . I currently only have 3 clients using the portal. I also don’t like that it isn’t listed by company but by the [sensitive content hidden] name . I wish there was better customer service .

Ok. Customer support and consulting have been just ok. I have asked multiple times for a strategic quarterback to help design and build a system that lines up with our business model.
Pros: Portal, task visibility, modern look and feel, task automation, folder structure, clean look and feel,
Cons: Flexibility, Best/Leading practices, Invoicing/Billing, assigning tasks, training, Executive Dashboard, calendar functionality, Hierarchy between Engagement and Task and sub tasks,
David C. · Managing Member · Accounting · December 22, 2025
Overall, Canopy's platform has reduced the time spent on day-to-day admin tasks drastically. It has made our client's file and communication experience with us easy and painless. And it looks to be built for future advancements. We've been very satisfied after 1+ years of fully using the platform.
Pros: Canopy is an all-in-one solution for our client information, files, portal, and time & billing. File and task sharing with our clients in real time is amazing.
Cons: There are some features that have been requested and noted by Canopy but have yet to make their product update roadmap.
Max A. · CPA · Accounting · December 22, 2025
I think they listen and try to incorporate changes that the accounting firms need. Software was not really built for public accounting.
Pros: The assistance we received from the onset was excellent. Staff was attentive and got us the answers we needed.
Cons: Reporting has a lot to be desired. There need to be more canned/stock reports. The insights function with answers/liveboards are to complicated. Time needs to be more in line with a typical timesheet, totals for days without having to run filters.
Christina E. · Partner · Accounting · December 22, 2025
Overall CANOPY is good. Still have to learn more about automations and the Ai integration. Want to ensure that everything this tax season is set it and forget it for the most part.
Pros: Everything in one place--CRM, email capability, secure client portal; understand that we will have the capability to also text our clients. Need to find out more about this capability.
Cons: ensuring I am leveraging all of it's capabilities to my benefit. Have to figure a lot out on my own. Tried to get assistance requesting a phone call, however no one called me. Will try to sort things out via tutorials.

I have only been using it for about a month and I already want to upgrade to the service for time tracking and invoices!
Pros: There are a lot of great features for the price. Sharing and requesting files with clients is amazing! Requesting electronic signatures makes my small firm feel like we can provide a high dollar service!
Cons: Cost for step by step implementation. However I can Google anything I need help with and it takes me to Canopy’s FAQ for quick answers.
BRIANA B. · Owner · Accounting · December 17, 2025
Good over the last 5 years, it has come a long way! Clients seem to love the portal and the ability to see all their documents securely.
Pros: Managing and organizing tasks and having the client portal in the same place. The ability to have tasks reoccur automatically is great!
Cons: Not having the ability to integrate invoicing into QBD, use a another payment processor in the program, and editing and then signing a PDF.
Garrett K. · Managing Member · Accounting · December 17, 2025
Overall, our experience with Canopy has been positive. It’s a solid, reliable platform that helps us stay organized, manage client communication in one place, and maintain a clean, professional workflow on the tax side.
Pros: Canopy gives us one clean, centralized place to manage client communication and tax workflow. The client portal is easy for clients to use, the organizers and document requests keep things structured, and the e-signature piece helps everything move along without a lot of back-and-forth. From our side, it keeps us organized and compliant, and from the client’s side, it feels simple and professional, which is important to us at BSU.
Cons: What we liked least about Canopy is that some of the workflow and automation can feel a bit rigid. For a firm like ours that serves a wide mix of clients, there are times we want more flexibility and customization in how requests, tasks, and follow-ups are handled. It’s a strong platform overall, but certain processes can feel more “one-size-fits-all” than ideal, especially when managing more complex or non-standard engagements.

Canopy has been a great solution for the start up of our new firm. Staff and clients like it and we find the cost to be a great value.
Pros: $80
Cons: The reporting areas are our biggest frustration. The only way to create reports outside of canopy is to export to a .csv file. This is very frustrating as (1) the presentation is terrible. It requires a ton of time editing to make it look good for presentation and (2) the data is manipulable. If I want to pull a report of hours worked for payroll, I take a screenshot of the totals before pulling a report. I have accidentally "lost" hours when editing the .csv report to go along with my payroll reporting. I only knew about it by taking a screenshot of a report and comparing the two. Being able to export or print to pdf or word would be a huge bonus.

Overall, I like Canopy. I do believe that there is a lot more kinks to be worked out for the software; however, it has a lot of potential.
Pros: I like the ability to to set up tasks from various places (task bar, client profile, client list, via email).
Cons: I don't like the fact that I can't message me team outside of a task in the software. I always have to message within a task only. I also don't like the fact that I cannot bulk assign tasks within the task area, only within the client list. Additionally, the search bar in the client list does not allow me to search, select, and search again, which makes bulk assigning tasks more tedious.

- We are figuring it out but it's taken a solid year of using. - Document storage is easy to access. - There are a lot of 'glitches' but Canopy is responsive and helpful. - The revenue reporting is difficult to navigate when paid invoices are archived. Not sure why it's even available to archive paid invoices to begin with. - Would definitely recommend.
Pros: - It's overall efficiency and ease of use. - The tasks, subtasks are easy to use. - Insights reports are amazing! - Responsiveness of support.
Cons: - Applying credits duplicates revenue - consider applying as deposits instead of credits. Training - consider using mock client list, tasks & subtasks during training. This would have made a HUGE difference. - Updates throw off our tracking! We appreciate the updates but our method(s) of tracking get wonky. - Stationary statuses that cannot be sorted or reworded.

Experience has been good overall. Service has been prompt and good when needed. Love the fact that the product is not stagnant but is improving all of the time.
Pros: It is user friendly. It is flexible in that you can add fields. The reports are easy to run and report lots of information.
Cons: can't use many fields as merge fields in emails. Need to have more access to created fields. Could use better ways to do mass changes.
John B. · Partner · Accounting · December 17, 2025
My overall experience with Canopy is great. It streamlines our workflows and keeps us organized. Beyond that, I’m loving the new features rolling out—questionnaires, document checklists, and the AI that turns files into custom questionnaires are just fantastic. It’s a system that keeps evolving and making our lives easier.
Pros: What I like most about Canopy is how seamlessly it organizes our workflow. The automation is a game-changer—from client communication to automatic reminders, keeping us on track. The secure portal offers peace of mind, and the user interface is friendly and easy to navigate. It’s truly helped us stay organized and proactive.
Cons: What I like least is that while Canopy pulls transcripts automatically, I still have to manually save them into files. It would save a lot of time if that step could be automated. The extra manual process makes it feel a bit tedious in an otherwise smooth system.
Mary W. · Innovation Strategist · Accounting · December 17, 2025
Overall it has been good. Easy to use, etc. Clients love the app. Everything is all in one place. Easy to use on the go as well.
Pros: That is covers all the areas a CPA firm needs. I don't have to go get several different softwares and services to be able to run my business.
Cons: Key features usually roll out after tax season has started for the year. So that makes me feel like I'm always behind on the features that have come out.
KayLynn D. · Owner · Accounting · December 17, 2025
Don't know how we survived without it! We are very happy with the product and delighted to have such dedicated support.
Pros: We LOVE that Canopy brings all the information and documentation needed to one place. This save a great deal of time. Managing work flow has never been easier with Canopy's intuitive tools.
Cons: Honestly, they continue to make improvements based on user feedback. Our dislikes keep getting fixed! I would really like to have a working calendar tie into the mix. So we could see and or reschedule client appointments without having to use a stand alone calendar.
Melissa L. · Owner · Accounting · December 16, 2025
Our overall experience with Canopy has been great, they have the best customer services! License management has also been very helpful.
Pros: Its very easy to use for out staff and clients. I like that they continure to release new helpful features .
Cons: That certain features aren't included like an appointment scheduler, or the ability to schedule Emails.
Larissa V. · Office manager · Accounting · December 16, 2025
Transition wasnt as smooth as I would have hoped but I really like my agent. She had done a great job helping me.
Pros: Ease of use, simplicity and value. I feel like we are going to better utilize this system over the system we just replaced.
Cons: Missing some functions we had with our old provider. I was informed that some of the things we need are in the works though.
